Harrington among 50 Most Influential Gardeners

Bloomfield, CT May 9, 2005 Sustainable Growth co-founder Todd Harrington is being recognized for his impact in the green industry. Since founding his own landscaping company nearly two decades ago (Harrington's Organicare), he has been showing people a kinder, gentler way to maintain their properties. He has since co-authored the nation's first-ever organic land-care standards and has been selected as one of the 50 Most Influential Gardeners in the Northeast.

To commemorate its Special Collector's 10th anniversary 50th edition which appeared on newsstands May 9, the gardening magazine known as People, Places & Plants published the first-ever list of its kind to honor regional gardeners. Including people from the six New England states and New York , the poll is broken into five categories: Hobby, Professional, Non-Profit, Business and Education. According to the magazine, which was launched in Maine in 1995, the nomination process took more than a year and considered thousands of individuals. Ten individuals from Connecticut were ultimately included.

"This is one of the most ambitious projects we've ever undertaken and we're proud of the list," said publisher Paul Tukey. "Todd Harrington is a young man who has truly made a difference in his profession. He has stood by his ideals, which certainly wasn't easy in the beginning of his career, and has emerged as a role model for the entire green industry."

"In the last 4-5 years we have reduced our pesticide use by 85% which has saved us a lot of money. The money we have saved from not using the pesticides has gone into research and development of natural alternatives. Within two years from now we hope to be 100% organic," said Todd Harrington owner of Harrington's Organicare and founding member of Sustainable Growth.

Organic lawn care is now one of the fastest growing segments of the green industry.

"Todd has been involved from the beginning in the development of the NOFA organic land care program and the standards for organic land care," said Bill Duesing of the Northeast Organic Farmers Association. "His knowledge and practical experience have been invaluable. He is widely respected in the land care community."

Todd brings his multiple decades of experience in land care to the team of experts at Sustainable Growth. He continues to advance best practices in sustainable land care and make them available to customers through the rapidly growing network of Sustainable Growth franchises.
